WNY's Unknown Stories - The black rock of Black Rock

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Kaisertown was named for its early German population, Parkside sits next to the park, Riverside sits next to the river. There's a lot of logic to the names of most Buffalo neighborhoods, but how about Black Rock?

Really the answer is right out in the open.

You've probably passed it hundreds of times and didn't give it a second thought, but there it is, sitting right along the 190. Just a little north of the Peace Bridge is the black rock of Black Rock, or what's left of it.

The original out-cropping rose 60 feet above the river and went out about as far as the Bird Island Pier that runs under the bridge today.

Home Invasion In Black Rock Neighborhood

Buffalo, NY - 2 On Your Side recently got a phone call into our Tipline from a woman who says men posing as city employees broke into her elderly mother's home.

Like many calls we get, the woman did not want to tell her story on camera for safety concerns, but Buffalo Police confirmed the incident, which took place Friday afternoon, saying two men posing as "Water Department" employees came to the home Thursday afternoon and robbed her of some personal papers and some cash.

Even though the woman's family claimed these two men worked for the city, 2 On Your Side did find out ways you can protect yourself by making sure any city employee that shows up at your home actually do.

Penney Estate Sale: Collector's Treasures

LOCKPORT, NY-- The three day estate sale for over 3,000 items from the vast collections of Buffalo attorney Charles Rand Penney opened Friday at the Kenan Center in Lockport.

Organizers say Penney, who inherited his wealth, traveled to 75 countries and collected items ranging from costumes to furniture to paintings, posters, and even coat hangers. It was all stored in rented office space in Lockport.

Some items like paintings have been donated through the years to local art museums. But there is much more to be found at the estate sale according to Attorney Gerard Hogan who served as executor for the estate. Penney passed away last year at the age of 87.  He requested the proceeds benefit his nieces and nephews as well as some local institutions.

The sale runs again Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM and then on Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Tour The Incredible Holly Steam Engines at the Col. Ward This Sunday
  • Buffalo's Hidden treasure are the Holly Steam Pumps at the Col. Francis G. Ward Pumping Station on Porter Ave. Built by the Holly Manufacturing Co., Buffalo N.Y. in 1914. They still exist today in their original configuration complete and intact. The five engines each stand 60 ft. tall and weigh in at 1,100 tons apiece and are capable of pumping up to 30,000,000 million gallons per day each. They were the largest engines ever built by the Holly Company. They operated, pumping Buffalo's water till about 1980.  The building itself is magnificent with its large arched windows, tile walls, iron railings and street lights lining the balcony.
