New Green Housing Unit

BUFFALO-There's a new low income housing unit in the City of Buffalo, and it's the first of its kind to get the green stamp of approval.

The building is called the Amherst Station and it's located at the corner of Amherst and Main Streets in North Buffalo.

The 2-story, $1.8 million project will is the first affordable rental housing unit to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program.

Sue Bissonette from Cazenovia Recovery Systems says that being kind to the planet wasn't the only reason to make the complex green.

"We put a lot of effort into making this building as sustainable and energy efficient as we possibly could...with the main goal being able to keep utility costs down for the tenants because of the affordability of the apartment," Bissonette said.

UB School of Architecture to Get Its Own Redesign

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo has announced a restoration and renewal project for the School of Architecture and Planning on the university's South Campus.

The school is housed in Hayes Hall and Crosby Hall -- two of the most historic structures and iconic buildings at UB. Through the utilization of New York State critical maintenance funds, this $50 million project will preserve the historic exteriors of the buildings while creating academic spaces befitting a 21st century school of architecture and planning.

"This is an inspiring initiative," said Brian Carter, dean of the UB School of Architecture and Planning.

Eggertsville Firefighters Respond to Apartment Fire

EGGERTSVILLE, N.Y. - Firemen from the Eggertsville Hose Company extinguished a fire at the Princeton Court apartment complex, 129 Princeton Avenue, near the University at Buffalo South Campus, this morning.

Fire Chief John Buttino said firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the building and found flames in a kitchen spreading to the living room of apartment 3 when they arrived. Due to initial fears that occupants could still be in the building, a second alarm was struck, bringing additional crews from the North Bailey and Snyder fire deparments.

Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control in 17 minutes. Maitenance staff and an off-duty Buffalo Fire Department firefighter had already assisted residents in evacuating the complex, Buttino said.

The cause is under investigation. No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $225,000.
