MANgels Dress for Success to Help Relay Team Fight Cancer | Community Spirit
About two dozen Western New York men have signed on to shave their legs, don women’s wear and ham it up to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The second annual Relay for Life Peaches N Crème Fashion Show will be held Saturday, May 12, at the Historic Palace Theatre, 2 East Ave., Lockport. The show is being organized by Relay team Maurices Angels, and it features men volunteering to wear fashions donated by Maurices on Transit Road in Lockport.
Team Captain Anne LaSota said that the idea came about last year when teams were discussing fundraising ideas.
“We didn’t have one and needed one quick,” she said. “I looked at Cat Hair Brownies Captain Jay Zimmerman, who happens to be a friend of mine, and for some reason pictured him in a dress.”
She ran her thought by her team, and members loved it.
“It took only a few days to round up 17 men that were ready willing and eager to dress like a woman,” she said.
Know as the team’s MANgels, the male models spent time April 22 and 29 choosing outfits that they would prefer to show off on stage. Fashions will feature sporty looks, business casual attire and spring and summer dresses, complete with purses, wigs and other accessories. A family event, the show promises to be tasteful and light-hearted.
The MANgels will compete for the title of Miss Peaches N Crème, and this year’s event also will include a talent show.
“Last year’s models went as far as having special heels made, painting their nails, shaving their legs, dying their hair and even complained of cramping and bloating on the night of the big show,” LaSota said, adding that last year’s Miss Peaches N Crème was her father, Richard Scinta.
LaSota and her team are grateful to all who are donating their time to make the event a success, including the models: Scinta, TJ Gray, Donnie Boyle, Brian Bailey, Tom Shanley, Nathan Shanley, Andrew Mullen, Jason Hart, Thomas Quatrini, Jeff Sheehan, Steve Woolnough, Patty Woolnough, Jake Hosking, Patrick McPartland, Scott Leffler, Rick Dent, Mike Passino, Brian Keleher, Tom Randolph, Nathan Leibensperger, Tev Maslowski, Alec Maslowski and Jason Beabout, with more additions possible.
Model McPartland of Buffalo, who chose the stage name “Pretty Pattie,” said he volunteers with cancer-related initiatives in honor of his parents, and the Peaches N Crème Fashion Show sounded like a fun way to raise awareness and help the cause.
“I wanted to show my feminine side and help fight cancer,” he said.
Hair and make-up will be done by Jenny Wallack, Lynnsey Spear and Lisa Swanson, as well as others, and photography and videography will be courtesy of Rob Micoli, Bill Evans and Heather Grimmer. Also, graphic design is being handled by Krista Roberts. Miss Niagara Desiree Wiley will serve as the guest speaker, and music will be provided by Brent Pawley. LaSota also appreciates the enthusiasm and support of her teammates, Bill Russell, Katie Paterson, Sarah Koziol, Erin Regan, Angela Eick, Kelly Cleveland and Heather and Hayley LaSota.
The show also will feature a slideshow celebrating the lives of loves ones who have died, are struggling with or have survived cancer, as well as their caregivers.
Anne LaSota said that the team participates in the Relay for Life to help battle the terrible disease.
“While we all have our own reasons for wanting to fight back; the Maurices Angels fight back for those that can’t,” she said.
The event also will feature a basket auction, 50/50 split and refreshments, including beer, wine and pizza.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for the auctions, with the show running from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 presale or $15 at the door. For tickets or more information, visit the event’s Facebook invite page at https://www.facebook.com/events/235082083244963 or call 622-3336.
