Counting Down to International Music and Dance at TD Sunfest 2017

TD Sunfest 2017, Canada’s premier celebration of world cultures, returns to nearby London, Ontario’s Victoria Park from July 6-9!

A free admission event, the park will open daily at 11 a.m., with opening ceremonies scheduled to take place at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July 6. Live music will be featured from 6 to 11 p.m. Thursday and noon to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

World-class Drum Corps from San Antonio Coming to WNY in July

As a prelude to the Aug. 6 Drums Along the Waterfront - Tour of Champions competition taking place at New Era Field in Orchard Park, the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps from San Antonio, Texas will be making a promotional tour stop in Gowanda on July 6. Arriving from a competition in Boston, the Crossmen will be utilizing Gowanda Central School’s facilities for a day-long rehearsal.

With musical-athlete membership of 150 strong, the Crossmen compete in Drum Corps International’s (DCI) World Class level, which is considered marching music’s major league. The corps finished in tenth place in last year’s DCI World Championships held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Founded in 1974, the Crossmen are a 501 (c)(3) education and youth development organization assisting young people in becoming outstanding individuals through music and the performing arts.

Parent-Child Play Group Coming to Dog Ears Bookstore

A Parent-Child Play Group for children approximately 18 to 36 months, accompanied by a parent, grandparent or caregiver, is coming to Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo, this summer.

This fun and interactive group will meet five Saturdays upstairs at Dog Ears Bookstore. Facilitated by Maureen McDonnell, a licensed speech pathologist, this play group focuses on early language skills through socialization, songs, stories, play and movement. Each class is theme based and includes circle time, gross motor activities, free play, songs, finger plays, crafts and a snack.

The group will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. July 15, 22 and 29, and Aug. 12 and 19. The cost is $70 per child, with a discount offered for siblings. Space is limited! To reserve your space, please call Maureen at 713-6195.

Dog Ears Bookstore to Offer Free Puppy Tales Series

A new six-week Puppy Tales series at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, located at 688 Abbott Road in South Buffalo, will kick off at 10:15 a.m. Friday, June 30.

Open to children ages 2 to 4 accompanied by a parent or guardian, Puppy Tales runs on six consecutive Friday mornings and each session includes three stories, a craft and healthy snacks. This is a free summer session sponsored by Matthew Whitehead and RealtyUSA.

Elmwood Village Farmers Market July 1 Highlights Include Performance by the BPO String Quartet

The popular Elmwood Village Farmers Market, featuring nearly 40 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local produce and products, continues on Saturday, July 1, at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village. Hours at the open-air market, a program of the Elmwood Village Association, are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine, through November. 

Musical entertainment on July 1 will be a special presentation by the BPO String Quartet at 10 a.m. Hosting the market’s community group tables will be West Side Community Services, The Friends of the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter and the Buffalo Wellness Center. Offering wine-tasting will be Leonard Oakes Estate Winery and Victorianbourg Wine Estate.

Dog Ears Bookstore to Offer Summer Reading and Writing Camps for Kids and Teens

Summer reading and writing camps for kids and teens will be offered this summer at Dog Ears Bookstore & The Enlightenment Literacy Arts Center, located at 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo.

A free Summer Reading & Writing Camp for Kids begins on June 26. Sponsored by South District Councilman Chris Scanlon, this camp will feature reading and writing activities, games and more, with all activities aligned with Common Core and New York State Standards in Education. Participants must reside in Councilman Scanlon’s district (14220, 14210, 14206).

Held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, this camp will be offered from June 26 through June 30 for 7 and 8 year olds, July 17-21 for students ages 9 to 11, and July 10-14 for students ages 12 and 13.

Annual South Buffalo Alive Garden Tour Set for July 16

South Buffalo Alive’s 17th annual Garden Tour, showcasing approximately 50 beautiful properties throughout South Buffalo and the Old First Ward neighborhood, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16. 

“The Garden Tour includes a wide variety of homes and businesses showcasing amazing gardens, landscaping and other outdoor features,” according to South Buffalo Alive’s Marge Ryan. 

Tours begin at Tim Russert’s Children’s Garden located at 2002 South Park Ave., between Choate and Whitfield avenues and next to the Dudley Library. Participants are encouraged to make this their first stop, where they will receive a tour brochure and information to make the tour very simple to follow.
