KENMORE, N.Y.-Through the first four innings of a non-league matchup at St. Joe's between the Marauders and North Tonawanda it was scoreless. Both teams got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning but it was St. Joe's coming away with a 5-to-1 win.
The Lumberjacks opened the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth. St. Joe's answered with four in the bottom of the frame. The key play a two run sacrifice fly off the bat of # 42 Matt Matre.
North Tonawanda's # 3 Shawn O'Lay drove in NT's only run of the ballgame with an infield hit. Bob O'Connor # 12 scored on the play. In the bottom of the inning St. Joe's tied it when # 31 Phillip Wells infield hit drove in # 17 Jake Kopacz. The Marauders quickly took the lead when, with # 42 Matt Matre at the plate # 7 Yanni Zulia flew home as the pitch got past the Lumberjacks catcher. Matre drove home the final two runs of the inning on a sacrifice play. # 10 Jared Baldinelli and Wells scored on the play with Wells hustling home all the way from second base. The Marauders added another run in the bottom of the sixth as Baldinelli singled home the final run of the game. # 21 Donnie Killian was three for three with a double for St. Joe's.
St. Joe's head coach Paul Nasca told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "I think they showed good patience..not pressing when they got down..and at the plate letting the game come to them and letting things develop a little bit."
With the win St. Joe's improves to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Marauders are at Nichols for a league game Wednesday afternoon.
