Northtowns Pet Blog: The Back-To-School Blues

Northtowns Pet Blog: The Back-To-School Blues

It isn’t just children who suffer from the back to school blues—pets can suffer too. After a long, fun summer, an empty house can be a difficult adjustment for pets. Pet Sitters International advises pet owners to become familiar with the signs of pet separation anxiety and how it can be treated.

Pet separation anxiety is a psychological term to describe the stress and anxiety brought on by separation from the primary pet caretaker. This issue can become a serious medical condition, with cases and their accompanying symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Most pet owners are familiar with the more common symptoms, but many may be surprised to learn that the full extent of the symptoms begin before the owner leaves and continues long after their departure.

2 Your Pet: Teressa

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Animal Shelter does a wonderful job of helping animals that have nowhere else to go. However, sometimes other organizations step in to help out.

That's the case this week with Teressa. This Staffordshire Terrier is being taken care of by the "Black Dog Second Chance" organization. This organization takes dogs off the hands of the shelter and places them into foster homes while they await adoption.

Teressa is 2 years old and has a zest for life! She loves being with people and is great with kids. She enjoys playing with other dogs and will always be there for you.

If you are interested in adopting Teressa, you can send an email to her foster mom here.

2 Your Pet airs every week on Daybreak Saturday.

Help fill the pantry for the Buffalo Zoo’s animals this fall and winter! On Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., shoppers at participating Tops Friendly Markets locations will have the opportunity to purchase an extra gift for the Zoo to help keep the animals happy and healthy.

After selecting items from the Zoo’s grocery wish list, which will be provided at each location, shoppers can leave their gift with a Zoo volunteer in the store lobby. All of these generous donations will then be used as special enrichment treats to promote the animals’ natural behaviors and to stimulate them physically and mentally.
