A Press Release from the Office of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-28), Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement after House Republicans agreed to pass a two-month extension of the payroll-tax cut and unemployment insurance. The agreement will provide tax relief for 160 million Americans, and extend unemployment insurance for 2.2 million Americans.

“We should have given Americans a tax cut on Monday, when we were all in town and prepared to send this bill to the President. Instead we got dangerous theatrics. It’s a shameful way of doing business. But I am pleased to see that we are moving ahead with this tax cut for middle class families, reimbursement for doctors, and vital unemployment insurance to Americans during this holiday season.”

New Data on Unsheltered Homeless in Erie County

The Homeless Alliance of WNY in partnership with the WNY Coalition for the Homeless conducted a survey of the unsheltered homeless in Erie County on October 14th and 15th.  Over 25 trained outreach workers and Homeless Alliance staff conducted the surveys in known homeless camps throughout the city, soup kitchens, and Harbor House.

135 people were found to be living in conditions not meant for human habitation.  Because of weather conditions during the survey time period, it is estimated that there is a minimum of another 100 people who were not counted.  Our estimate is that there are at least 250 people living in conditions not meant for human habitation.
