Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez (D - Brooklyn), the Housing Chair of the New York State Assembly, and Assemblywoman Crystal Davis Peoples-Stokes (D-Buffalo), visited the Matt Urban Center (1081 Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14212) today for an agency and neighborhood tour.

We used this wonderful opportunity to examine and discuss the preservation of affordable housing for low-income and moderate-income families. We also examined policies and programs to address unemployment, environmental hazards, and the creation and sustainability of quality affordable rental and homeownership opportunities.

Federal Funding to support Shoreline Restoration Efforts along Riverbend Project

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced the award of $167,000 in federal funding for Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.   The grant, provided through the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, will support Phase II of the Buffalo Riverbend project

“These federal funds will continue our efforts to preserve and enhance the water’s edge,” said Congressman Higgins, a member of the Congressional Great Lakes Task Force.  “Beyond the clear environmental benefits this work will continue the transformation of Buffalo’s old and industrial image to one that is new, exciting and welcoming to the public and innovative economic development.”

Buffalo, NY A trio of Erie County businesses have seen growth spurts courtesy of a new Erie County Industrial Development Agency (ECIDA) loan program which targets established companies that have difficulties obtaining traditional bank financing due to increasingly strict lending policies.

The Business Stimulus Loan Fund has provided more than $800,000 to three fast-growing Erie County firms since its establishment last fall, leading to expansion of their workforces and client rosters.

Desperate to solve the state's budget crisis, an influx of energy industry dollars is proving too tantalizing to pass up for most legislators. Unfortunately, it seems the process is inherently catastrophic to the environment, those living in the area, and most unnervingly the supply of potable water. A large portion of the Marcellus Shale system, the planned site of extensive drilling operations, underlies the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and the Delaware River Basin.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to celebrate the memory of James T. Molloy.  Many in Washington know Jim as the former, and last, Doorkeeper of the House.  Western New Yorkers know Jim as proud, third generation Irish-American and a proud career public servant.
